How to Make a SharePoint File Link Download the File Instead of Opening It in the Browser.

I received a request to provide a link to a file stored in a SharePoint document library on a site's home page. When clicked, the link should download the file.

I tried a couple of existing solutions, such as adding '?download=1' and using "/_layouts/download.aspx?SourceUrl=", but neither worked for me.

I then found another solution that mimics the behavior of the Download option available in the SharePoint document library, and it worked perfectly.

Instead of guessing or building a URL, you can force the browser to tell you the exact, hidden link SharePoint triggers when you click the physical download button. I’ll explain it in the steps below.

1. Open your SharePoint document library in a desktop browser (like Chrome or Edge).

2. Press F12 on your keyboard (or right-click anywhere on the page and select Inspect) to open the Developer Tools panel.

3. Click on the Network tab at the top of the developer panel.

4. With the panel still open, click the native Download button on your file in SharePoint.

5. Watch the items fill up in the Network tab. Look for the file name or a request starting with download.aspx.

6. Right-click that row, hover over Copy, and choose Copy link address.

This generates an authentic, pre-authenticated link that immediately triggers a binary file download when clicked by anyone with file permissions. Paste this URL into Notepad to save it.

The link is given below.

https://0trrh.sharepoint.com/_layouts/15/download.aspx?UniqueId=01b91cad%2D3a6b%2D4b4c%2Da316%2D32f6f1fd2c6d

You can use this link embedded in the Button on the Home page.

By default, repeated download attempts add (1), (2) to the end of the filename.
